How to Replace Garage Door Springs Yourself

⚠️ WARNING:
Garage door springs are under extreme tension and can cause serious injury or death if mishandled. If you lack experience or confidence, hire a professional. Proceed at your own risk.

Tools & Materials Needed:
- Replacement springs (match size/type to your door)
- Winding bars (for torsion springs) / vice grips (for extension springs)
- Adjustable wrench
- Socket set
- Safety glasses & gloves
- Ladder
- C-clamps (to secure the door)

Steps to Replace Torsion Springs

*(Located above the door on a metal shaft)*

1. Disconnect the Opener:
- Unplug the garage door opener.
- Manually lift the door halfway and secure it with C-clamps on both tracks.

2. Release Old Spring Tension:
- Insert winding bars into the spring’s winding cone.
- Slowly unwind the spring (1/4 turn at a time) until tension is fully released.
- Repeat for the second spring if dual-system.

3. Remove the Spring:
- Loosen the set screws on the winding cone.
- Slide the old spring off the torsion tube.

4. Install New Spring:
- Slide the new spring onto the tube and secure the winding cone.
- Wind the spring carefully (follow manufacturer’s turns count—usually 30+ for a standard door).
- Tighten set screws.

5. Test Balance:
- Remove clamps and manually operate the door. It should stay in place when halfway open.

Steps to Replace Extension Springs

(Located along the tracks on both sides)

1. Secure the Door:
- Clamp the door to the tracks or have a helper hold it firmly.

2. Relieve Tension:
- Carefully disconnect the safety cable (if present).
- Use vice grips to secure the track near the spring.
- Unhook the old spring from the pulley system.

3. Install New Spring:
- Attach the new spring to the track anchor and pulley.
- Reconnect the safety cable through the spring.

4. Test Operation:
- Slowly open/close the door to ensure smooth movement.

Final Checks

- Lubricate springs with garage door lubricant (silicone-based).
- Reconnect the opener and test auto-operation.

❗ Critical Reminder:
If the door feels unbalanced or springs make unusual noises, STOP and consult a professional. Incorrect installation can damage the door or cause injury.
